What about Sweetcorn

We regularly get asked about sweet corn and it’s addressed in the FAQ section of Stop Counting Calories and Start Losing Weight (it’s on page 252 of the most recent version and it’s replicated here…

Nature delivers sweet corn on the cob, so, strictly speaking, you should eat corn on the cob so that you are eating the whole food – all the chewy bits that tinned sweet corn takes out. (You can’t have butter on corn on the cob, as this mixes fat with carbs).

Tinned or frozen sweet corn is OK, but it does have a high glycaemic index so it impacts blood glucose more than green vegetables and salads etc. As a general rule, brighter coloured vegetables tend to be higher in carbohydrate (butternut squash, carrots, sweet corn) and therefore they are best to eat more sparingly than green vegetables and salad, which can be eaten in large quantities.

If you suspect that you have Candida, sweet corn is best avoided for a few weeks and it doesn’t help Hypoglycaemia much either. In the US, corn is also a major Food Intolerance – because Americans eat a lot of popcorn and corn chips – so it is a food eaten too much of and too often.

    Hi Andy, I’m planning to start Phase 1. I would like to know if I can have nuts like Almonds, Cashews, pumpkin, sesame, sunflower, watermelon seeds in moderation in phase one? I start my day with nuts and It would be really difficult for me to give this up. Please advice. Thanks

      Olive oil with lemon is delicious, or just olive oil with salt and pepper. Natural live yoghurt with herbs…

    I did the diet about 8 years ago and felt fantastic and lost 2 stone…. In recent years i have slipped and now about to start phase 1 again… can you tell me if ryvita wholemeal crackers are ok to have?

      Check out the ingredient list, full of strange looking things from what I can see, plus wheat based, so not on Ph1.

    I am planning to start the Harcome Diet as I am a Candida sufferer. LosIng weight is not necessarily my requirement. It would be an added bonus of course! I’ve been taking apple cider vinegar to help with candida (just one tablespoon a day.) Can I carry on taking that when I start the diet.
    And can I put soya milk in decaf coffee?

    Hi Andy, I haven’t received an email from you as you said, but I’m sure its because you’re so busy. Sorry to bug you but I am really wanting this diet to work for me, like it so obviously has for others, but the most I have lost is 2 pounds in two weeks?! (and that goes up and down but never lower). I usually try and eat some kind of meat and egg for breakfast, again some cold cuts at lunch or raw veg, followed by dinner of lamb chops and vegetables (celery, peppers, garlic, onions, leek, tomatoes)or steak and veg or chicken and veg. I drink decaf coffee and herbal tea. I avoid any carbs because they’ve always left me bloated and I don’t touch anything processed or with any “ose” in it! However, I seem to just need to look at food and it piles the weight on me.
    I’m thinking maybe, at 5 foot nothing in height, I’m eating too much? Sometimes I just don’t feel hungry and will miss breakfast or lunch or both but I always have a good hearty evening meal. Is this where I’m going wrong? I do find it very difficult to eat three meals a day consistently as I usually can’t feel hungry. Please post any help you can. Many thanks

    Hi, I’ve been doing phase 1 for seven days and lost about four pounds in the first few days, I decided to stick with phase 1 as I’d like to loose two stone. I’ve been really good with what I’m eating, and I’ve kept a food diary. I have had two 50g portions of rice during the last seven days, drank lots of water, I introduced lactose free milk two days ago, which i have a minimal amount in a couple of cups of coffee (decaf!) a day and a small amount of cheddar cheese that I had with an omelette.
    I’m now putting weight back on and it’s starting to get me down 🙁
    What am I doing wrong? Please help!

      Hi Annabel. Too many variables to be able to comment without understanding more of your background but try and remove the cheese and see what happens.

    I have just started phase 1 and would like to know if I can use stir fry sauces or soy sauce with my stir fry meals?

      Most commercial stir-fry sauces are sugar laden and should be avoided. Tamari soy sauce is acceptable.

    Hi there, been a vegetarian all my life and wonder why I cannot eat pulses, lentils in the first phase. Just on day two now and feel ok but really into eggs and Tofu is nicer marinated but not allowed. Help!!
